Spring Crane Maintenance Checklist

Jun. 9 2023 News By RTL Equipment

Consistent and proactive maintenance of your crane is the best way to protect the value of your investment while reducing downtime on the jobsite. Follow the checklist below to get your rough terrain, crawler, truck, or all terrain crane ready for a season of hard work after months of cold winter storage. Keep in mind that your Operator’s Manual is the best source to find service and maintenance information for your specific crane.

  1. Check all fluid levels and top off as needed, including:
    • Hydraulic Oil
    • Engine Oil
    • Final Drives
    • Swing Drive
    • Coolant
    • Transmission Fluid (Rubber Tire Machines)
    • DEF (if applicable)
    • Be sure to report unusually low fluid levels to a mechanic for additional diagnosis.
  2. Perform filter and fluid changes needed. Filter and fluid changes should be determined by hours on the crane and/or the time it has been since last service.
  3. DEF filter should be serviced if applicable.
  4. Check cab air filters and clean or replace as needed.
  5. Check batteries charge level and clean connections on the battery terminals.
  6. Check cab and all compartments for animal or weather damage. Determine the extent of any damage relative to any fire risk or operational issues.
  7. Start engine, bring it up to temperature and operate all functions. Verify that all electrical systems on the crane are operating properly.
  8. Inspect for leaks of any fluids.
  9. Check the fan belt and fan for wear.
  10. Grease the crane (See your Operator's Manual)
  11. Inspect tires or tracks for condition and wear. Verify that tracks are within specification.
  12. Inspect all wire rope and lubricate as needed.
  13. On lattice cranes, check all pins in the boom sections and check the condition of the pendant lines. Lubricate them as necessary.
  14. On telescoping boom cranes, inspect and lubricate the wear pads in the boom along with any extend/retract chains or cables in the boom.
  15. Inspect all rigging and beckets for condition and fit.
  16. Check the LMI operations and all safety equipment to verify it is in correct working order.
  17. Following all maintenance, be sure to update your Machine Maintenance Log. If you need a Maintenance Log, please contact RTL Equipment.
